Rob Math aka “The Onion” has raised the bar and set a new standard for the term “Master Player.”
An invigorating blend of slippery blues runs, a singing vibrato, elements of chicken-pickin’, mixed with swing style bebop lines and pyrotechnical shredding are just some of the flavors you’ll hear in Rob’s original style.
Recognized for his virtuosic chops, and gifted hands infused with tone, Rob has an exceptional ability to make anything sound amazing! He also possesses the extraordinary talent to play different styles with true authenticity, yet always maintaining his own distinctive voice.
Rob’s playing has been praised by and impressed heavy weight guitar greats such as Paul Gilbert and Johnny Hiland. Two-time Grammy nominated producer Howard Benson (Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, Hoobastank, Creed) has proclaimed: “Wow! Rob is an amazing player.” Rob has been endorsed by publisher Greg Di Benedetto of Guitar World and Guitar One magazines, because he too has been “amazed” by Rob’s incredible talent.
Rob’s journey to success began in Long Island, New York. His strong fascination with the rock band KISS sparked his desire to start playing guitar at the early age of seven and began formal lessons at eight. The first guitar player to really inspire Rob though was Brian Setzer from the Stray Cats and a few years later Eddie Van Halen would be a major influence.
After graduating from the prestigious Berklee College of Music, he returned to his native New York and began playing the local music scene with various original and cover bands. However, a spur of the moment decision to fly out to LA and record a demo with record producer Michael Lattanzi, whose studio was upstairs in Steve Vai’s house in Hollywood, changed the course of his career. There, his talent caught the attention and ear of Juno Award winning, Canadian rock music producer and song writer, Dave Tyson (Alannah Myles (Black Velvet), Amanda Marshall, Hall and Oates). Dave listened to a few of Rob’s demos and was blown away! Rob’s great feel and natural ability to make a basic track come to life with unique and creative guitar parts made him a prime candidate for studio work, especially recording on records. Dave decided to give the then-unknown guitarist a shot, and hired him to lay down guitar for his next record. This was a pivotal experience in Rob’s career path and inspired him to move to Los Angeles and pursue a career as a studio guitarist.
Recognized for his diverse talents, he has since played on albums by platinum selling artists SEAL, NELLY, and TONI BRAXTON and has recorded for many other noted artists including JoJo, Macy Gray, The Pussy Cat Dolls, Paula Deanda and Nick Lachey to name a few.
As a songwriter Rob has had “cuts” on Toni Braxton’s latest album “Libra” (Shadowless, Places) and Ashley Parker Angel’s debut “Soundtrack to your life” (Alright OK, Who cares) and has written for many others. He was also the guitarist for Billie Myers, famous for her hit “Kiss the Rain,” and toured with her after playing on her second album Vertigo.
As “the house guitarist” for Soulpower Productions in Los Angeles, he worked exclusively with the Danish hit making team Soulshock and Karlin (Whitney Houston, Usher, Destiny’s Child) along with the Grammy nominated songwriter/producer Alex Cantrall, (Jojo, Beyonce, Fantasia).
Well known too, as a former clinician and demonstrator for Marshall and Vox amplification and Korg’s ToneWorks division, Rob has performed to SRO audiences around the globe in Europe, Asia, and throughout the USA.

Currently, Rob has shifted his focus back to playing live. He can be seen performing and touring with the band PLAYER known for their #1 hit “Baby Come Back” (with original members Peter Beckett and Ron Moss), filling a position previously held by guitarist such as Elliott Easton from The Cars and Dave Amato REO Speed Wagon. He is also a member of the LA based hard rock metal band Soul Sign founded by Bjorn Englen (Yngwie Malmsteen, Quiet Riot) on bass, and featuring Michael Olivieri (Leatherwolf) on vocals and Michael Taylor on drums. Soul Sign just completed a short tour of Sweden in support of its upcoming album, “Life in the Dark”.
Rob will be performing with Annabella Lwin of Bow Wow Wow in 2010 as well as various other artists and most recently the group Five Points from NY featured in the N7 films documentary “State of Rock”.
Available soon is Rob’s first solo all-instrumental CD as composer, arranger, producer and performer. The new music infuses his rich sounds of original composition with masterful improvisation and enduring melodies creating a sophisticated soundscape that is difficult to categorize in a single genre. Watch for his band “The Rob Math Psycho Circus” that will be performing around the Los Angeles area. As a most sought after guitarist, he continues to lend his multi-dimensional talents to artists and producers on a regular basis. All who have heard his playing agree that you must get to know this true guitar hero!
